Celebrity endorsement is seen by companies as a practice that can really turn a product into a success and bring in high revenues, simply because they assume people want to be associated with a product that a celebrity appears to use.Through the examination of an endorsement giant, Michael Jordan, one can see when a celebrity can be successful at selling a product and when he or she cannot be.

How Jordan Brand used celebrity endorsement to overcome a dip in the rankings and keep its reputation as the most iconic sneaker brand of all time. From the moment it signed Jordan to today, here’s everything you need to know.

The Air Jordan Collaboration History

Michael Jordan is a legend transcending basketball, with his impact as a global icon felt both on and off the court. In 1984, when MJ was about to get drafted into the NBA, he had three major sneaker brands vying for his signature. This gave Michael significant leverage in negotiating terms and earning a contract that would suit his worth as an athlete. And after hearing Nike’s bombastic $2.5 million pitch, MJ once revealed how he asked Adidas if they could match that, out of nothing but loyalty.

In 1984, Nike teamed up with Michael Jordan to launch Jordan Brand, a brand of shoes and athletic wear built around the player. At the time, Nike was a struggling brand selling running shoes with an idea to reinvent itself as a company for athletic stars.

It is reported that it wasn’t so easy for the company to sign the then-budding NBA rookie. Nike reportedly offered Jordan $500,000 a year, in cash for five years, hoping it could convince him to come on board. Unfortunately for Nike, Jordan really wanted to work with Adidas. But, Adidas wasn’t really an option for Jordan, as the company was undergoing a leadership shift at the time.

Converse, the shoe Jordan wore while playing for the University of North Carolina, wanted to sign Jordan, but it already had celebrity athlete endorsers in Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Converse made Jordan an offer, but he reportedly wasn’t excited by it and didn’t know where he would fit in the brand’s already star-studded lineup. Still, Jordan made one last attempt at his dream company, taking Nike’s offer to Adidas and asking them to come “anywhere close” to the offer. It didn’t work out with Adidas, and Jordan ultimately signed with Nike.

Nike wanted to build an entire line around Jordan’s almost-superhuman ability to dunk. Once Jordan was on board, he began wearing the brand’s shoes on the court. The first Nike shoe he wore in the NBA was the Nike Air Ship seen below. The very first pair that he wore from his eponymous brand was called Air Jordan I. It caused a lot of commotion both on and off the court.

How Michael Jordan’s Mother Influenced The Jordan Partnership And Athlete Endorsements?

Signing with Nike wasn’t Jordan’s first choice. But his parents, especially his mother, Deloris, convinced him that considering the Nike deal could be more beneficial to him in the long run; because the company wasn’t as well-known in the basketball space, he could be a major star for them and leverage his talents for a better deal.

“In all honesty, I never wore Nike shoes until I signed with Nike,” Jordan said in an interview. “I was a big Adidas, Converse guy coming out of college. Then actually my parents made me go out to (Nike’s headquarters) to hear their proposal.”

By all accounts, the initial Jordan and Nike deal was unprecedented. In addition to the $2.5 million, five-year contract (more than double what Adidas offered him) that he signed, Jordan also received 25% royalties of all shoes sold with his likeness—an equity push by Deloris that would change how athletes approached endorsement deals for years to come.

Michael Jordan’s First Loyalty Lay With Adidas Before Signing With Nike

Jordan always wanted to choose Adidas over any other company, even before he became a professional. In archival footage from before his professional career, Jordan appeared saying, “I like the Lakers, I like Marques Johnson, and I like Adidas. I like Adidas shoes.” This indicates Jordan’s natural faithfulness or loyalty toward Adidas over the other sneaker brands. In an interview much later in his career, Jordan said the following on the matter, something you can

“I went through the presentation with Nike. You know, they really made a great effort of trying to have me and have my input on the shoe design, any shoes that I wanted to wear. But then I was very loyal. I went back to Adidas, the Adidas contract that I had and say ‘look you know this is the Nike contract. If you come in anywhere close, you know, I sound with you guys’”

However, Adidas’s offer was nowhere close similar to Nike’s. Michael’s agent David Falk revealed how Adidas was also dysfunctional during that time due to leadership changes, and also was not willing to offer Michael his own line of shoes. Jordan ended up signing with Nike and creating history with the brand. The $2.5 million deal has made Jordan the face of Nike and its basketball presence globally. Besides, Jordan’s deal was a crucial business move for the Oregon-based company toward becoming a global sporting brand.

It would have been hard to predict a mere NBA rookie’s career path. Yet, Nike signed him on with all the passion in the world. Their deal for Jordan was massive, especially considering the company’s mere $25 million net worth at the time. And because of it, top executives such as Phil Knight and Sonny Vaccaro were involved all the way in having MJ on board with Nike.

Air Jordan first started out being Michael’s line of shoes. However, in 1997, Nike formed a separate brand out of Jordan, with MJ earning a 5% royalty from the profits. In the last five years, the Jordan brand has earned $19.6 billion alone, which has benefitted Nike massively. On the other hand, Adidas lost out on significant opportunities and profits due to its rigid approach to business beyond the European continent back when it mattered most.
